Steve Vickers CTA FCCA ACA - Tax Partner

For many years Steve was a business adviser and auditor before specialising in advising on tax matters, therefore bringing a wealth of general financial experience to the table when advising clients.

He trained with a national firm of accountants and also has spent a large portion of his career with regional firms resulting in an extensive knowledge of a wide range of sizes of company and businesses and the sectors they operate in.

The core of Steve’s work is direct tax planning for both business and individuals. The bulk of his work is acting for SME’s on business and corporate tax, and on personal tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax for their directors, owners and shareholders.

Steve also assists personal and corporate clients dealing with, and defending, HMRC investigations.

More recently Steve has also undertaken tax work in dispute resolution cases, including divorce cases. Typically, appointed by the client’s legal advisers, he assists with negotiating complex tax issues. This type of work has also included Steve being appointed by the court as an expert witness in tax matters.

Steve has been carrying out business and share valuations for many years for clients for tax purposes and also as negotiation tools in mergers and acquisitions and for dispute resolution purposes.

Steve is also a member of the Tax Faculty and the Valuation and Forensic Special Interest Groups of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Key case studies

Steve was appointed as expert witness for one party to a matrimonial case and he advised on the efficacy of a particular tax planning structure the other spouse had undertaken. Negotiating with the other party’s tax barrister, Steve, on behalf of his client, was able to negotiate a successful solution.

Steve advised on a share sale and group re-structuring. This was a complicated case with many stakeholders involved, and hence required some innovative planning to ensure the client’s financial and tax objectives were met. Using a combination of share re-organisations, issuing new shares, a share option scheme and group transfers of assets, Steve was able to suggest a route through some complex technical tax and companies act issues to assist in achieving completion of the deal.
