Tax Investigations

Even if you are happy that your accounting records are sound and your tax affairs are all in order, this does not mean that you will not be selected for enquiry by HM Revenue and Customs. If HM Revenue & Customs investigate your business it can be disruptive, intrusive and expensive.

A new approach by HMRC

From 6 April 2009 HMRC have new powers changing the way they carry out investigations. There is also a new penalty regime designed to increase the levels of penalties charged where tax has been understated.

The first effects of these changes has already been felt. HMRC have stated they intend to force banks holding offshore accounts to provide them with data on clients with UK addresses. This will almost certainly result in an increased number of enquiries into the tax affairs of individuals identified.

HMRC enquiries are on the increase!

CCH Fee Protection

Even if the final outcome of the enquiry is that you don’t have to pay any additional tax, you may be faced with a bill for our professional fees incurred in settling the matter. It is not unknown for a taxpayer to be forced into a settlement, simply because the costs involved in dealing with the case were becoming unaffordable.

To avoid this, we offer insurance which covers you for our costs helping you deal with full HMRC enquiries. This gives you peace of mind knowing we are working on your behalf to get the best result for you, at no extra cost to you. See our Fee Protection Page for more information.
